Glycosylation is one of the most common and most biologically important posttranslational modifications (PTMs) of proteins, but it is also one of the most difficult to study.  Vaccine research for pathogenic viruses such as herpes, HIV, and hepatitis C, all depend upon an understanding of envelope glycoproteins.  Many cancer biomarkers are either glycoproteins or glycan epitopes on cell surface or secreted glycoproteins.  For other biotherapeutics, glycosylation is one of the critical quality attributes that affect safety and efficacy.
